Itinerary: Alaska - Inside Passage
This is our second Alaska cruise on the Regal Princess. We like the
itinerary out of San Francisco because we don't have to fly. The ship is
an older ship, but it is in good shape. We enjoyed its size. The cruise
was sold out, but we never felt crowded. It is fairly easy to navigate the
whole ship. Some people miss the wraparound deck, but we didn't really
notice it. You can still go out to the front of the ship from the
starboard side of the Baja Deck. This time we had a balcony room. The
balcony was small, but we enjoyed watching the whales and the beautiful
scenery.
The food: The food on the Regal is kind of hit and miss. Some of it was
outstanding and some was terrible. Overall, the Cafe Del Sol buffet was
our least favorite place to eat. It was typical buffet food. My husband
and sister-in-law liked the hamburger bar and Bravo Pizzeria. Mostly,
though, we ate in the dining room for dinner and sometimes for lunch. The
beef was pretty good each night. Lobster & Crab were also good. Some of
the fish was dry, but one night we had swordfish and it was the best I
have had. Our waiter always brought extra plates of each entree and
dessert for us to try. The pasta is always good. For desserts, we found
the cakes usually too dry. Other desserts were pretty good. The dessert
souffles were our favorite.
We had balcony rooms on the Baja deck. They are a pretty good size. My
husband is 6'5" tall and 450 lbs and he was comfortable in the bathroom
and the shower. The shower head was even high enough for him, which is
very unusual. Lots of closet space and drawers are available. There is
only 1 outlet in the room so you might bring an extension cord if you have
make-up mirrors, computers, curling irons, or anything else to plug in.
There are hair dryers in the room. There is also a small refrigerator in
the room. We were also advised to bring a bungee to hold the balcony door
open, but didn't need it. The door would stay open on its own.
Entertainment: The evening entertainment was pretty good. We like the big
dance productions, so we enjoyed the shows. There were 2 comedians and a
juggling comedian that were funny too. In Juneau they had Libby Riddles
give an hour talk. She was interesting. The naturalist onboard was Alan
Cortash. He was OK. Not as good as Brent Nixon who was onboard 2 years
ago, but I guess better than some.
Service was wonderful. Anything we asked for, we got. On the Regal, you
can special order breakfast items like Eggs Benedict or Steak & Eggs for
the next morning and they will have it for you. We did that almost every
evening for the next morning. I asked for copies of the menus and the
dining room captain made sure I had a set at my room on the last night.
Also, if you want some Princess playing cards, just ask at the casino or
the purser's desk and they will give you some.
