Established in 1840 by Samuel Cunard, this is one of the oldest companies in the passenger shipping industry. Formerly one of the largest companies in that field, Cunard's star diminished with the breakthrough of the airplane in the 1960s. Acquired by Carnival Corporation in 1998, Cunard has successfully launched the Queen Mary 2, the largest, widest, highest and longest ocean liner ever built, the first liner in 30 years. Presently, Cunard operates the world-famous Queen Elizabeth 2, the last ship to cross the Atlantic on a regular basis, and the smaller cruise liner Caronia, a classic beauty of the seven seas. The QM2 is sailing trans Atlantic crossings during the summer and then spends the winter months in the Caribbean.
