Horizon Cruise Review

Tracy Howard

Age: 29
Occupation: Marketing Manager
Number of Cruises: 2
Cruise Line: Celebrity
Ship: Horizon
Sailing Date: April 23rd, 2005
Itinerary: US Virgin Islands

This was our second cruise – our first with Celebrity. We had read all the other reviews about Horizon - which lacked a lot of positives, but for the price point, we booked anyway. We found ourselves “preparing for the worst” – and within 30 minutes of being onboard, we were shocked at what we had read.

There is no doubt that the Celebrity Horizon is an “older” ship – in comparison to some others. It has not been redecorated in the last few years, and it is definitely smaller than the mega ships. There are no climbing walls or tennis courts. But I can tell you – this ship had character and was kept immaculately. The blankets may be older and the carpet a little dated, but since when does “new” mean “the best” ??

Our service was just out of this world – and by the end of the week we felt guilty for how well we had been taken care of. The food – whether you ate in the main dining room, at the buffet or at the grill – was absolutely fantastic, and always beyond our expectations. Our wait staff was incredible, and our room attendants went above and beyond the call of duty. The pool area was more than adequate and all the lounges were quaint and well maintained. The entertainment was entertaining and there were activities each day for all interests.

There is no doubt that the boat rocks a bit more than the mega ships, and satellite tv wasn’t always working…. But it’s a boat for heaven’s sake! Boats rock! And why are you in your room watching TV anyway? Get out and enjoy the cruise!

The crowd was older – and although we are only in our late 20’s – we were glad to not have a bazillion kids running around us. The atmosphere was more refined and elegant because of it.

After 7 days of complete pampering, we were sad to disembark – and even sadder to hear that Horizon is being sold at the end of the year. She is sailing Bermuda itineraries for the rest of the summer – and we would recommend to her to anyone. Well, unless of course you are looking for rock walls, movie theaters, trampolines and Vegas style shows. Then I would recommend Cedar Point or Six Flags instead!
